Celebrate the Day of the Dead today!

Celebrate the Day of the Dead with El Pueblo, Inc.

Dear Community,

On Monday, November 2nd El Pueblo, Inc. will celebrate the Day of the Dead, one of the most important and ancient traditions in Mexico and in some countries of Latin America. The Day of the Dead celebration will take place outside of the International Foods Market from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm to highlight the impact of El Pueblo's programs and to honor this important tradition. The International Foods Market is located at 421 Chapanoke Rd. in Raleigh.

The celebration will consist of altars created by each one of El Pueblo's programs including: Public Safety, Health, Youth Leadership and Advocacy. The organization is inviting everyone to contribute to a community altar, which will be created, by community members who will bring items or foods to be placed in the altar. Refreshments, including the traditional "Pan de Muertos" or 'Bread of the Dead" and hot beverages will be offered to participants. As a family celebration, this event will also offer activities for children and folkloric dances as well as a program explaining the history and importance of the Day of the Dead and information about the work of the different programs at El Pueblo which promote the importance of preventing premature or unjust deaths.

The Day of the Dead is a tradition that goes back to the time of the Aztecs. Through the years, this celebration has become a fusion of the Aztec and Catholic traditions. Currently, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st, which is dedicated to the souls of children, and November 2nd which is dedicated to the souls of adults. During these two days, family members visit the graves of those who have died and build offerings which are created using specific elements. It is believed that the spirits of those that have passed come back to this world to share with their loved ones and to enjoy their favorite dishes which are placed in the offerings.
